With one leg of the tether extending down then outside the spine of the carabiner you reduce the leverage effect at the top of the carabiner. Now this tether isn't designed to be super stiff. It is sewn with the tightest of tolerances. Now with the NEW caraLINK v2, once the tether is installed on the carabiner the gate can now fully open. This allows you to install it on the top of the DMM Triple Attachment Pulley or DMM Hitch Climber Eccentric with ease. 

When you use a traditional stiff tether you end up having the legs of the hitch cord, stiff tether and slack tending pulley all squished at the top of the carabiner. Not with this system!
